David and Teresa in the Garden

About Us

Our Permaculture Partnership

A little bit about us . . .

We are David and Teresa and we live in Martinez. Our intention is to create a working example of sustainability at our home. Why are we doing this? We believe fully and whole-Heartedly it is time to change direction.

It is time to examine many unchallenged assumptions about our place in the ecology of this beautiful Planet called Mother Earth. Time to end what appears to be a global liquidation sale. Time to shift focus from economy and growth to more locally sustainable practices.

Locally we have found residents that have a valuable knowledge to share. Wisdom that we have a responsibility to pass on to our children and grandchildren. We plan to coordinate talks and workshops lead by members of our community on topics that will include native plants, edible gardens, fruit trees in Martinez, how to drill a well, how to use greywater, how to create and observe a butterfly garden, natural building, yoga integration, and many more.

If it seems overwhelming from our current perspective, it is. As a way forward, we invite you to take small sustainable steps. We would be happy if we sparked some interest and a desire to dig deeper. We hope to inspire and empower with a ‘can do’ attitude. We believe everyone can do something to create a more sustainable Martinez.

Often important skills and resources are not recognized or valued. We will be delighted if through this website or receiving our e-newsletter, you uncover your own special talent or natural passion and through its expression, help us to make a more self-supporting and stable community.

David Mudge

Master Landscape Gardener

David Mudge is a father of two, Landscape Artist, Reiki Master, and with his partner Teresa, the founder of an ever expanding Tantra yoga community in the East Bay. He has owned a landscape business for 15 years and thrives through creativity and connection to the soil.

Growing up on a farm in Devon England, David′s education and passion has been working with Mother Earth from a very early age. The early part of his education was also heavily steeped in religion and spirituality. From these experiences, David′s character developed a natural affinity to Mother Nature and the mystery of Creation. David studied Agriculture and Farm Business Management at college and returned to run the family farm in Devon. In the mid-eighties, his own growth directed him to study holistic health both in England and California where he eventually settled. He has also worked extensively with the developmentally disabled population.

Currently David is studying and experimenting in Permaculture Design. He completed his Permaculture Design Certification at Merritt College in Spring of 2009. David is already teaching this method of gardening to his existing clients when possible, and plans to expand into a more formal Permaculture Design teaching curriculum in the very near future. Since a key component of a more sustainable design for a flourishing garden is water, David, along with his partner and co-teacher Teresa Brumfield, is also teaching greywater and rainwater catchment workshops⁄installations. David completed the Greywater Design and Installation certification course taught by Greywater Action in 2009. David feels it is part of his mission to help lift peoples′ awareness around sustainable living to bring the ever-increasing need for healing to Mother Earth.

David offers his creativity, life experience, gentleness of his Soul, respect for Mother Nature and a deep desire to bring Spirit to our Earthly experience. Creating a Garden experience has been and continues to be a vehicle to nurture David′s Spirit and he is committed to helping other Beings find their path through the Garden.

“I believe that the concept of ‘garden’ and nature can, at this particular time in history, play an increasingly relevant role in the development of the brand of consciousness we call ‘Human Being.’

Beyond the mirror that each garden holds up to its gardener, beyond the science, biology and architecture, even beyond sustainability, economics and personal sanctuary, there exists a mystery that speaks in ever urgent and eloquent tones. Plaintively it beckons us to rediscover an ancient template. It faithfully marks a point of return to our abandoned path and to re-recognize our sacred alliance with our own ‘Being’ through the mysteries of the garden.” --David Mudge
